I, BEVERLY EILEEN DAVIS, Faculty Associate Education, Simon
Fraser University, in the City of
Richmond, Province of British Columbia, MAKE OATH AND SAY AS
FOLLOWS:
THAT I am a techer of teachers of children, and as a
teacher for 27 years I have become an expert in children's
growth and development and factors that effect their
learning, and as such have knowledge of the following facts
and matters deposed to.
THAT as President of the Peace and Global Education
Provincial Specialist Association of Teachers, I have worked
in close association with many teachers committed to teaching
about and for peace. One specific area of focus is learning
ways to alleviate the fears children have concerning nuclear
issues. I have designed and conduct workshops to help
teachers deal with those fears and empower students to take
action.
THAT I have had extensive training in effects on
children of nuclear technology, including weapons and
reactors, through the B.C. Teachers' Federation and Educators
for Social Responsibility at Harvard and Tufts Universities.
I have developed an expertise in this area.
THAT I attach as Exhibit "A" to this my affidavit,
to substantiate my
perspective that children have been and are adversely
affected by the threat of nuclear disaster.
THAT I believe it is unconscienable that we continue to
sentence our children to these fears by allowing nuclear-
capable and nuclear-powered warships to berth in Esquimalt
and Victoria harbours, and traverse other harbours and waters
in British Columbia.
THAT as an educator I believe in the power of informed
decision making. As citizens in a democracy we all, children
and adults, have a right to a public environmental review of
nuclear ship visits to Greater Victoria.
